Olives Harvest
The olive harvest takes place between October and November. This is “going to olives time”, which translated into Sicilian is “Tempu r’Alivi”. A moment in time when, in old times, all the family was involved: men, women and children. A period of celebration and joy, since the making of olive oil was the most precious asset the land could give. Taking part in the harvesting means perpetuating an ancient and sacred rhythm; in fact, the olive tree has a sacredness in Sicily that is handed down to us by the ancient Greeks. In the company of the peasants we will learn not only the harvesting techniques, but also many anecdotes and stories related to the peasant tradition. A day in the countryside is not just “fatigue”, though. Tasting the new oil is the tastiest part of the tradition, accompanied by simple warm bread, or bread “cunzato” style, garnished with olives and cow or sheep cheese.
