Eastern Sicily, Volcanoes and the Eolian Islands
The Etna Volcano, the island of Vulcano and Stromboli Island are the three volcanoes that separate the Tyrrhenian Sea from the Ionian Sea. Here is where some of the most charming legends and stories of the World’s literature take origin; where mother nature’s strong soul modelled and characterized a territory that frightens and fascinates at the same time. The volcano’s lava looking like black lace characterizes the Paesi Etnei area; while visiting the islands mentioned in the Odyssey poem, and passing through Scilla e Cariddi, we will revive Ulysses’ myth. The Cyclops’ Riviera is the place where the myth of Polyphemus melts with the world renown writer Giovanni Verga’s novels, and the literary current known as “Verismo”. The Eolian Islands have been so many times seen as movie set, that their landscapes have thus become famous all over the world. We will visit: Stromboli Island, that was background landscape for Roberto Rossellini and Ingrid Bergman love story in the movie; Vulcano Island, known in ancient Greek time as home to Efesto, god of fire; Salina Island, known in ancient times as Dydime, or twin, the romantic island where the movie “The Postman” was shot.
